The
Vladimir Medem Workmen's School of Westchester is uniquely
administered as a parent cooperative. The school includes
a board and committees that allow our ideas to change to continuously
meet the needs of our children and their parents. Our teachers
assist us in developing a curriculum that is based on the
fundamental beliefs of the Workmen's Circle Schools. These
beliefs provide the framework that allows us to foster and
enhance our childrens' Jewish identities. Our parents' active
participation in how the school evolves assures that we keep
in touch with each family's particular interests. This model
fosters and enhances the childrens' Jewish identity as part
of the Jewish people through the development of positive Jewish
attitudes. In addition, we help to prepare our children for
involvement in the affairs of the American Jewish Community
at large. Through adult education and family activities, we
foster a sense of the community in our families.
Jewish
LITERATURE
The
literary works of great Yiddish poets and writers deepen our
childrens' understanding of the past, with an eye toward the
future. Our students' Jewish identity is reinforced through
their exposure to Jewish folklore. The study of Jewish literature
provides the ideal forum to convey Jewish values in an entertaining
and vivid manner.
Jewish
LANGUAGE
Spicy,
vibrant, full of zest, lively, rich in flavor, steeped in
culture: this is Yiddish. Our children learn the language
of 30 generations of Jews; 1,000 years of Jewish history.
Through language, our children become the keepers of the flame.
Jewish
ARTS
Through
singing of Yiddish and Hebrew melodies, our music teachers
strike a chord in the hearts and minds of our children. Dance
enables students to express themselves and connect to Jewish
and other cultures.
Jewish
CULTURE
The historic and cultural aspects of Judaism are explored
during our many holiday celebrations. Our community of teachers
and parents encourage social interaction among students
and parents. Jewish holiday celebrations further provide
year long opportunities to celebrate, reflect and strengthen
our bond of 5,000 years of Jewish history and culture. Our
teachers highlight significant people, places and events
in Jewish history. Current events are taught to develop
an awareness of issues affecting the Jewish community in
the United States and abroad and the connection between
the Jewish community and others.
